Computers

Computers.... Megabytes or Mosquito Bites?
I love computers.. I have owned a computer of some sort since 1984. I think my first one was a Tandy MC10....(thats 10K of RAM by the way!)
It seems pretty lame these days, but back in the '80s... computers like the MC10 were state of the art. I was hooked from the first day I plugged it in.

The next computer "upgrade" was a Commodore 64. Wow... 64K of RAM!
I firmly believe that if it was not for this fabulous machine, we would not have half of the computer wizardry we love today. These revolutionary little computers sold like hotcakes and the world was soon craving for more of this incredible technology.

The "more" for me came again from Commodore stable, this time as an Amiga 2000. This machine had amazingt graphics and sound (it even had a built-in speech module).
The graphics handling of this computer was amazing considering its size, even more so with the legendary Deluxe Paint (written by the brilliant Dan DeSilva) installed onto it. I still believe that Deluxe Paint has no equal for ease of use, even today, particularly when it came to creating animation. I still own and use my trusty old Amiga 2000.

Sadly, Commodore bowed to the pressure of the IBM style machines with their Windows format and higher resolution graphics and sound. It was good, if not bloodyminded marketing by the spindoctors of Microsoft that killed off many of the early machines and, sadly, Commodore, Atari and many others went the way of the west.
In it's wake, Commodore and the Amiga left as a legacy, many infant technologies we take for granted today, which include CD-ROM Drives (Commodore called their revolutionary units.. CDTV... I still have one), an Icon Based Windows format ( Chip based on the Amigas, not Software greedy like the Microsoft version). Digital technology ( I remember using a CANON ION digital camera with an Amiga as far back as 1989) and a lot of other great ideas.... I think if Commodore were to return and take on the PC market today.... the results would be amazing...I can only hope!

Today I have a cantankerous ACER Aspire that has nearly seen better days. It has the usual quirks....like being out of date about ten minutes after I bought it. Not enough RAM, Not enough Speed.... Not enough gadgets...Not enough Money to keep up with the rot more likely. The computer manufacturers need to stop with the hype and give us all a chance to catch our breath and assess the situation for ourselves. These $3000 machines are an expensive doorstop after only a year or so of service.

My Acer is a 150MZ, with 32Meg of RAM, a 2.1Meg HD and a 12speed CD Drive (stop that laughing at the back!). where was I? ...oh yeah....It has for company, a Hewlett Packard 720C Printer and a Compeye Joyscan Scanner. It does the job and I will upgrade it when it is dead...NOT when it is out of date!
The Printer and Scanner are highly recommended by me, they have never had a day off since I bought them.

Upgrade!....I don't need no steekin' Upgrade!.. do I?
Now let me see.. Maybe I need to buy a Megzilla of RAM... A Warp Factor One processor Mark VII.... A Cinemascope Monitor....and a CDROM that can equal my blood pressure... oh yeah... and a Box of Valium.....
